Hi! Welcome to my website.

I am the author of historical novels set in the times of the ancient Celts. The Dalriada Trilogy takes place in prehistoric Scotland during the Roman invasions. My new books are about the ancient Irish. I love being able to have direct contact with readers, so please, if there’s anything you want to know or say, email away! For  returning readers, I have lots of great news to impart, so please go to latest news to catch up on new book deals, new agents, and new homes.

I am currently redeveloping my website to be able to share a lot more of myself with you, and open a better door into my world. This is the old site - obviously! I am only updating this page and the news page; the pages on book covers and reviews are not up to date, but will be soon. The "writing novels" part of me has to take precedence over the "web editor" most of the time.

UPDATE FOR U.S READERS: My new publisher is Bantam (Random House) and they are releasing the first novel of a new two-book series on FEBRUARY 24, 2009! It is called The Swan Maiden and is a retelling of the famous ancient Irish myth of Deirdre of the Sorrows - my favourite tale of all time. The second book (which I am now working on) is called The Raven Queen and is a reimagination of the life of Queen Maeve and her part in the famous Irish epic, The Tain. All juicy stuff, with the same mixture of romance, adventure, Celtic swordfights and spiritual goings-on as in my first trilogy.

No one has written a whole novel about Deirdre for many years, and though the Tain has been novelised, most notably by Morgan Llewellyn and more recently George Green, both stories were from the point of view of the Irish hero Cuchulainn. In my new books, I wanted to tell the stories of strong, independent female characters instead, struggling in a man's world. I've always loved the Deirdre myth. It is about an old king lusting after a young woman, trapping her into an unwanted betrothal. However, she takes her life into her own hands, throwing off the king's shackles to run away with the young hero Naisi, her true soulmate. Their passionate love frees her, but brings disaster to Ireland. There are shades of Romeo and Juliet, and of course Helen and Paris of Troy. See, isn't it a juicy story? Hope you like it!

Overlook published the third book in the Dalriada trilogy The Song of the North in January 2008. It is exactly the same book as the UK version by Orion called The Boar Stone. It is available at www.amazon.com

CANADIAN and AUSTRALIAN readers: The third novel in the Dalriada trilogy, The Boar Stone, came out in July 2007. You might need to ask for it in bookstores.

FOR GERMAN READERS: The German edition of The White Mare is out as "Tartan und Schwert" and The Dawn Stag as "Das Keltische Amulett". The third book that completes the trilogy, The Boar Stone was published as Die Rose Der Kelten in 2007. My German publisher Blanvalet will also publish my new books. The Swan Maiden should come out in 2009.

FOR READERS FROM THE NETHERLANDS: All three novels in my first trilogy are now out, translated into Dutch. The titles are De Witte Merrie, Hert van de Dageraad and De Stenen Beer.

FOR FRENCH READERS: The White Mare came out in France as "La Jument Blanche". The second book was released in June 2008. If you want any more information about French releases in francais, email the publisher Michel Lafon direct at service-commercial@michel-lafon.fr

FOR SPANISH and SOUTH AMERICAN READERS: The White Mare is published as "La Yegua Blanca." The Dawn Stag has just been bought by my Spanish publisher, Santillana, but I am not sure when it is coming out. Email them direct in Spanish at suma@santillana.es

If you have questions about the unusual end of The Dawn Stag, or the nature of trilogies please go to the "My News" page where there is a bit more information under a spoiler alert. I am having to stick to known history as much as possible, and there are some plot developments I really could not avoid or change. This is historical fiction, not pure fiction - I sure work hard to make it so and give you a little bit more!

Visit Scotland!

The Dalriada trilogy is set in ancient Scotland, mainly around the Kilmartin valley in Argyll. Most of the beautiful images shown here are reproduced with the kind permission of the Kilmartin House museum, the best local museum I have ever encountered, in one of the most picturesque, mysterious, and history-packed parts of Scotland.

David Lyons' photos are taken from Kilmartin: an Introduction and Guide, by Rachel Butter, which has all the info on the archaeological sites mentioned in my books, and will absolutely convince you to visit this soul home of mine. It, and lots more historical and tourist information, is available from the Kilmartin House Museum website at www.kilmartin.org
